One of the main features of the reconstructed mine is the Killhope Wheel, a 10-metre-diameter metal waterwheel. This was constructed by the Tyneside firm of William Armstrong.

The mining of lead ore took place here from 1818 until 1910 when production ceased, although it was briefly reopened in 1916. It lay derelict for over 60 years & fell into decay until the local council started a restoration programme in 1980.
